In the first quarter of 2007 the Caverns had only 23 visitors, which were just a few tourists who happened to visit the cave when there was a guide available for a tour.
In the first quarter of '08, with limited advertising, the number rose to 1,067 visitors. Cumberland Caverns management hopes the new schedule will continue to help more people visit their site.
The attraction on average sees 26,000 visitors a year in daily tours, school field trips, adventure and historic tours.
Cumberland Caverns was discovered in 1810 and has been open to the public since 1956. The cave is certified as a U.S. Natural Landmark.
Besides the daily walking tours, Cumberland Caverns offers four different educational group tours and seven different adventure tours which involve crawling and climbing through undeveloped portions of the cave.
There are more than 27 miles of passageways that have thus far been mapped inside Cumberland Caverns.
